Here are some pictures that I took for Dr Reinisch. The ear is continuing to heal wonderfully. Unfortunately, as you may be able to see in the pictures she has scabs growing on the scalp incision line and from the spot the "protective cup" cut her. Dr Reinisch says that while a scab is normally a sign that your body is healing itself, on the scalp it different. I guess because of the hair follicles under the scalp, hair oils sometimes get trapped under the scalp which can cause problems.
So under Dr Reinisch's direction we had to remove those scabs and apply a wet gauze dressing that we had to take off (along with newly forming scabs) every twelve hours. The good news is that after doing that for a couple weeks, those sites healed. The bad news is that new scab sites formed along the incision lines, and we had to keep starting over in new areas on the scalp. Over the next couple months, I think we never had more than a week where we weren't doing dressing changes every 12 hours. Some of the sites were not very sensitive, but some of them made Belle cry so it was not a fun process.
[ FYI -- Dr R doesn't know why Belle had such a hard time with her incisions not healing. He originally mentioned that perhaps part of Belle's stitches didn't properly dissolve or she's allergic to the thread used so for stage 2 he redid those incisions with a different type of thread. Although the site where she was cut by the cup didn't have stitches, so that couldn't be the problem there. We just hope and pray that her scalp will heal better after stage 2. ]
